CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

0800 Hours, Tuesday, December 15, 1942

Certosa di Trisulti Charterhouse, Outside of Collepardo

Head bowed, hands stuffed in his sleeves, Majorana’s determined stride took him toward the kitchen. Bruno hadn’t shown up at the sanctuary that morning so he, knowing there were other plumbing issues near the monastery’s kitchen, headed there. He needed to confront Bruno and…and what? He wasn’t clear what he would do. He was broken. He didn’t pray looking for guidance, fearing God would tell him to forgive the man, regardless of the reason he didn’t mail the letter. Majorana felt shame overcome him for not being more forgiving.

He reached a short flight of stairs that descended into a narrow cloister running along the wall of the kitchen. He stopped and watched as Bruno, about twenty feet away, on his knees and facing Majorana, shoved a wire down into a drain. A cloud of cigarette smoke hung over his head. Majorana glided down the steps into the cloister and removed his hands from inside his sleeves. Head up, he took long strides toward the unaware plumber.

Majorana bent down and jerked Bruno’s right arm up. The plumber’s cigarette fell from his lips and into the drain as Bruno pulled his arm free. “What are you doing? What do you want?” Bruno struggled to his feet, almost losing his balance.

Majorana shoved him against the wall and leaned in. Bruno was at least a foot taller than Majorana, but it did not deter Majorana as he shouted, “You never mailed the letter, did you? You lied to me when you said that you did what I asked you to.” Majorana felt a rage that shocked him. It was foreign to him, a feeling that he hadn’t experienced since he was a young child playing football with his brother, Luciano, in the hallway in their home in Rome. His brother was always better than him and he never let a moment go by during their games without telling Majorana so.

“What I said was true, Brother.”

“No, no, no. You are lying to me. But I can’t determine why. I won’t believe that my family would not respond. That’s unfathomable to me.”

“You have destroyed your relationship with them. If you are a genius, why can’t you understand that?”

Majorana’s rage peaked, and he began shouting at Bruno, spittle filling the air between them. Bruno shoved Majorana, who stumbled backward and slammed into a stone column, banging his head. His vision flashed with sparkling lights. “Leave me be, Brother. I want nothing to do with this letter. Or with you.”

When his vision stabilized, Majorana pushed off the column, about to reengage with Bruno, but he sensed the presence of someone at the top of the stairs he had come down. He turned to look and found Brother Alfieri staring at the two men.

Before Brother Alfieri could make a move toward them, Majorana bolted down the cloister. He heard Brother Alfieri’s sandals rapidly slapping the tile floor behind him. Majorana pulled open a door at the end of the cloister and slammed it shut behind him.
